 ITEM DESCRIPTION

Original 1st printing final state (White Lake) version 18 x 24&1/2" (small format) concert poster for the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair Aquarian Exposition, held in White Lake, NY from 8/15-17.1969.

Art by Arnold Skolnick, image is featured in the Art of Rock book on page 257 (plate 3.1).

Poster advertises performances by Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Tim Hardin, Richie Havens, the Incredible String Band, Bert Sommer, Ravi Shankar, Sly & the Family Stone and Sweetwater (8/15), Canned Heat, Creedence Clearwater (Revival), the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Quill, Keef Hartley, the Who, Janis Joplin and Mountain, (8/16), the Band, the Jeff Beck Group (*canceled), Joe Cocker (and the Grease Band), Blood, Sweat & Tears, Johnny Winter, Crosby, Stills & Nash (with an unadvertised appearance by Neil Young), Iron Butterfly (*canceled/stranded at the airport), Ten Years After and Jimi Hendrix (with Gypsies, Suns and Rainbows). Not listed on the poster (but did perform); Country Joe McDonald (with and without the Fish), the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, John Sebastian and Sha-Na-Na.

Medium-thick glossy-coated index stock poster is in very good (B/B+) condition; tack/pin holes (all four corners and in the top and right center margins), a 2" vertical tear in the bottom center margin (sealed on the reverse with clear tape), a few stray light surface scuffs and soft pinch bends, a light amount of pin-prick age spotting, a bit of minor creasing in the bottom right corner, a few tiny thin hairline bends around the outer margin area, a touch of toning and the original owner's name written in graphite pencil on the reverse, otherwise fine.

GREAT-looking lightly-used VERIFIED ORIGINAL FIRST PRINTING example of this iconic 1960's event poster. For a long time, it was VERY hard to differentiate the small-version original from the MANY reprints/bootlegs; a big plus for this particular example was that it came right from an old collection in upstate New York, not far from Bethel/White Lake (that had a few other interesting oddball NY-area pieces, mostly theater stuff). EVERYTHING in this collection was authentic and old- no reprints.

There are several differences between the originals and the reprints, but the EASIEST way to tell is the presence of a tiny red dot about 3/8" from the top edge of the dove's rear feather. This was confirmed by a photo of the ticket outlet poster that hung at the El Monaco Hotel (thanks to Woodstock Treasures for the photo) that exhibits the same dot (see photo). There are other little printing anomalies that are too involved to go into detail here, but for the time being, the red dot on the dove seems to be the main identifier.
