 ITEM DESCRIPTION

Original 9&1/2 x 13&1/2" (approximately, edges are covered by a matte) graphite pencil on tracing paper production sketch (professionally framed under plexiglas to 18&7/8 x 22&1/2" total size), along with a mounted 2nd printing (Triton Gallery distribution credit) 20 x 26" poster and original 2 x 1&1/2" ticket stub for the Who performing their rock opera "Tommy" ("the Final Performance") at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in New York, NY on 6/7/1970.

Art by David Byrd, the final image is featured in the Art of Rock book on page 404 (plate 4.221). Seeing as this is a one-of-a-kind piece of original art, a letter grade doesn't really apply here, but the piece appears to be in FANTASTIC shape- just a little light smudging on the surface, David's hand-written production notes and that's pretty much IT. The frame has a small surface scrape in the lower left edge and a small split/sliver out of the bottom left edge.

The medium-thin glossy silver stock poster is in decent (B/B-) condition; aside from the aforementioned mounting (to thick cardboard), the poster has started to separate from the board and there are a few horizontal moisture waves, a bit of edge/corner wear (a small edge tear in the lower left margin), scattered pinch dings/stress bends, etc... definitely on the used side, but it is essentially a throw-in with the artwork.

The ticket stub (matinee show, Row H, seat 30) is in decent shape- hand-torn left edge, a couple of tiny corner tip bends/splits, light handling, but otherwise OK.

ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE ONE-OF-A-KIND David Byrd artwork for one of the biggest Bill Graham Presents shows of 1970. Check out footage from the event (complete with a shot of the Metropolitan Opera's marquee poster featuring this EXACT design) HERE:
