Original 1st printing 8&1/2 x 11" concert flyer for the Grateful ("Greatful") Dead appearing with Sopwith Camel at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco, CA from 8/19-20/1966.
Art by Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse (who also has HAND-SIGNED the piece in pencil), image ("Frankenstein") is # 22 in the Family Dog/Avalon series.
Thin flat stock flyer is in VERY sharp near mint (A- to A-/B+) condition; aside from a series of small diagonal handling bends along the upper left margin/edge, a tiny hairline scratch in the upper right margin/edge and a couple of stray pin-prick surface marks and ultra-soft handling dings hiding within the image area, it is an absolutely GORGEOUS crisp/bright ARTIST-SIGNED example of this early Grateful Dead flyer from the Avalon.
This was reportedly the same weekend that Warner Brothers' Joe Smith signed the Dead to their recording contract, despite the band's attempts to "initiate" him into the San Francisco psychedelic scene (by way of legendary GD sound man Owsley "Bear" Stanley)... a monumental weekend, indeed!
