Original 1st printing 8&1/2 x 11" tan/buff colored-stock concert flyer for the ("Amazing") Charlatans appearing with Jefferson Airplane at California Hall in San Francisco, CA on 1/8/1966.
Art by Charlatans lead singer George Hunter (who also SIGNED the flyer in the bottom right corner/margin), image ("Rock & Roll Biplane") pre-dates the numbering system implemented by the Family Dog after Chet Helms took over several weeks after this show; this image is designated FD-IV in the Eric King guide.
Thin flat stock flyer is in very good to excellent (B/B+ to B+) condition; just a few stray soft handling dings, a soft smudge/discoloration in the upper right edge of the image area, a hint of edge toning (with a stray tiny nick or two) and a couple of tiny pinch/stress bends in the left/right margins, otherwise fine... an overall SUPERB-looking example of this 50-year-old pre-numbered Family Dog flyer.
As an interesting historical footnote; this event ran concurrently with the 1/8 Fillmore Acid Test, so the promoters for both shows (Family Dog/Merry Pranksters) arranged for transportation between the two venues so neither would be undersold. Allegedly, temporary FD caretakers/promoters (and future Grateful Dead managers) Danny Rifkin and Rock Scully left their own show to check out the Fillmore and never made it back. A fascinating artifact with a VERY cool back story!
This flyer (and several others we are featuring in this sale) comes from the collection of underground comix artist (and personal friend of Rick Griffin and Rick Shubb) George Metzger. Read more about George HERE:
