Original 1st printing 8&1/2 x 11" tan/buff colored-stock concert flyer for the ("Amazing") Charlatans appearing with Jefferson Airplane at California Hall in San Francisco, CA on 1/8/1966.
Art by Charlatans lead singer George Hunter (who also SIGNED the flyer in the bottom right corner/margin), image ("Rock & Roll Biplane") pre-dates the numbering system implemented by the Family Dog after Chet Helms took over several weeks after this show; this image is designated FD-IV in the Eric King guide.
Thin flat stock flyer is in very good (B/B+) condition; a set of one vertical and three flattened horizontal folds/thin creases (item was folded into 1/8ths and pressed out), a soft surface stain in the right center margin (just to the right of "Roll"), a series of ultra-thin vertical bends/creases (a paper anomaly) extending from the bottom right margin up through"Turk" and into the "li" of "California", a hint of toning and one or two ultra-tiny pin-prick surface spots, otherwise fine... an overall FANTASTIC-looking SIGNED example of this now 50-year-old pre-numbered Family Dog flyer. (*this item comes right from the personal collection of George Hunter)
As an interesting historical footnote; this event ran concurrently with the Fillmore Acid Test, so the promoters for both shows (Family Dog/Merry Pranksters) arranged for transportation between the two venues so neither would be undersold. Allegedly, temporary FD caretakers/promoters (and future Grateful Dead managers) Danny Rifkin and Rock Scully left their own show to check out the Fillmore and never made it back. A fascinating artifact with a VERY neat back story!
