Original 16&5/8 x 17&3/4" 1989/90 hand-airbrushed original art on heavy Crescent art board featuring the album cover design for the Grateful Dead's 1981 Arista Records album "Reckoning".
Art by (and SIGNED by) Rick Griffin, this image was part of a series of low-run/batch stencil-based airbrush paintings that were hand-made by Rick (in his un-ventilated garage), featuring different combinations of various 1960's-inspired (and beyond) icons. Most are simply art pieces featuring assorted Griffin "totems" (eyeballs, hopi masks), but only this one features a fully-realized Grateful Dead image... and the execution is SPOT-ON. As the story goes, a good number of the stencil paintings have different registration quality, depending on where they were in the run. The early ones (such as this one) are very tight/crisp, while some of the later ones tend to be a little more "wobbly". This example was in a frame, so there's a whisper of a matte shadow *(about 1&1/2-2") going around all four margins and there is a bit of archival fossilized tape residue on the reverse, but overall this example is probably the best-rendered version I have ever seen.
A KILLER ORIGINAL RICK GRIFFIN GRATEFUL DEAD ART!
