 ITEM DESCRIPTION
Original 1st printing 6&1/4 x 9&1/2" concert/event handbill for "Appeal III" the third Bill Graham-promoted San Francisco Mime Troupe benefit, held at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, CA on 1/14/1966.

Participants listed include: Great Society (featuring Grace Slick), the Grateful Dead (*"Formerly the Warlocks"), the Mystery Trend, the Gentleman's Band "and many other friends".

Designer unknown/not credited (calligraphy looks like Peter Bailey, the rest of the image is made up of a December 1965 Ralph J. Gleason article from the "San Francisco Chronicle"), image pre-dates the numbered Bill Graham/Fillmore series and appears in the Art of Rock on page 114 (plate 2.38).

Thin flat stock handbill is in good/decent (B/B-) condition; there is a light to moderate degree of toning (with a thin strip of discoloration (matte burn) going around the outer margin area, along with a tiny 1/4" edge tear in the top right margin, pair of hairline-thin vertical rust stains and a couple of VERY soft pin-prick spots going down the right side of the image, a few soft handling dings and a nearly-invisible pair of tiny pulls on the reverse, otherwise fine.

INCREDIBLY COOL and historically significant artifact- this piece marks the first time the name "Grateful Dead" appears on a Bill Graham-promoted handbill.
